In February 2021, Memphis (much like many parts of the U.S.) was hit hard by winter storms. First, ice. Then, snow. More ice, more snow. All followed by a colossal melt. It all created a sight, unlike anything I have ever seen in the South before. I dedicated the entire week of winter madness to documenting the beauty of it. Though times were crazy, pipes were bursting, cars weren’t starting, and the water was contaminated all over the city, I wanted to share a look into my childish fascination with everything that I saw that week. Take a peek into my love for the snow and my awe of the snow blanketing the Southern landscape.
This project is a fundraiser for the Dorothy Day House of Memphis. 100% of the proceeds will go to the House. Yes, 100% of the proceeds. The Dorothy Day House provides temporary housing and support services for homeless families in Memphis, TN. Their delicate and holistic approach keeps homeless families together, creating a safe haven and a community for entire families. In typical shelters, homeless families are often separated. Men are sent to one shelter while women, girls, and little boys are sent to another shelter. This means that parents cannot stay with their older sons; fathers must leave their daughters and small sons; husbands are separated from wives. At the Dorothy Day House of Memphis, the home-like atmosphere provides a sense of security, especially for the children, fosters self-esteem, and uplifts the human spirit. It creates one of the most vital ingredients for escaping poverty—hope. If interested in learning more about their mission, click here.
